Meet Jeremy Bentham
Jeremy Bentham lived in England from 1748 to 1832.
- He began reading when he was very young, and learned a second language when he was only four years old.
- Jeremy grew up to be a lawyer, and was very interested in treating people fairly.
- He was one of the first philosophers to worry about protecting animals. He thought that animals could feel pain just like humans do, so we shouldn't hurt them.
- Jeremy believed that people really just want to be happy. The best thing to do is to make as many people happy as possible.
- He even invented a special kind of math to measure the amount of happiness people could have.
- The best kind of happiness was the kind that happened to a lot of people at once, made people feel really great, and lasted for a long time.
