Meet Socrates

  • Pronounced "Saw-crat-ees"
  • He lived more than two thousand years ago in Greece.
  • Even though he was a famous philosopher, he never wrote down any of his ideas.
  • Everything we know about his thoughts we get from his student, Plato, who was also a famous philosopher.
  • Socrates believed that the smartest thing anyone could say is "I don't know."  People who don't know sometimes ask the best questions.
  • He also said "The unexamined life is not worth living."  This means that the most important thing we can do is ask questions, and listen to as many answers as possible.
  • Socrates was a great teacher.  When he taught his students philosophy, he didn't just give them the answers, but let them think about things for themselves.
