Meet Iris Murdoch

  • Iris lived from 1919 to 1999.  She was born in Ireland, but spent a lot of her life in England.
  • She was a philosopher, but was also famous for writing a lot of novels.
  • Many of her stories are written about ideas she had in philosophy.  Her characters kind of "act out" these ideas.
  • Iris wrote about education and religion, but what was most interesting to her was the idea of being good
  • Like many philosophers, Iris knew that figuring out how to be good was very difficult.  Life can be crazy, people can be crazy, and it's not always clear what the rules are.
  • Difficult or not, if we can understand how to be good, a lot of other things will become easier too.
  • Iris said that being good takes a lot of practice.  No one can tell you how to be good, exactly.  You just need to pay close attention to the world around you, and keep trying.
